what i read : april 2012

May 17, 2012

You guys, I was in a total reading slump in April. One nonfiction book on marriage and three children’s books, two of them audio. Sorry. I promise I picked it up in May (so far)! The Proper Care and Feeding of Marriage by Dr. Laura Schlessinger It’s about: The title kind of says it all, doesn’t it? But I just want to add, in case you don’t know who Dr. Laura is, that she is a trained family counselor with many years of experience who now has a radio show. Her fans are rabidly devoted and my husband is among them. I read this on his recommendation. I thought: I find that I agree very much with almost everything she says,…

what i read : february 2012

March 13, 2012

It appears that over half of the books I read most months are juvenile fantasy that I listen to on audio. That’s because I have an hour-long drive to and from work, so I go through them fast. But if you’re looking for literary fiction or classics, don’t worry! I’m working through all the books I own but haven’t read as well. Here’s what I read in February. Click the titles below for full reviews on Goodreads. Fablehaven book 5 by Brandon Mull It’s about: This was the last book in the series, so once again I’m not really going to get into it. I thought: The strength of this series continued through to the end, and I loved every minute…

February 16, 2012

In the interest of simplifying my life I’ve decided to move away from my separate book blog for now because I can’t keep up with it very well. So I’ll be incorporating my reviews here on a monthly-ish basis. I’ll give you a 1-2 line summary, review, and rating for each book. I’ll provide a link to my Goodreads review as well, if you’re interested in seeing more of my thoughts about it. I’m also participating in a couple of reading challenges this year, and I’ll tell you about those soon. Sound good? Okay. Here’s what I read in January. (Click on the titles below for full reviews.) Fablehaven books 3 and 4 by Brandon Mull. It’s about: The continued adventures of…

Review & Giveaway: Easy Canvas Prints

January 25, 2012

Have y’all seen those pictures that are printed on canvas, like a painting? I’ve always thought they look really nice, but I wasn’t sure they’d be my style. But I was contacted by Easy Canvas Prints to see if I’d like to try one out, and if I liked it, to give one away. I figured this was a great opportunity to get some more art for the nursery, since one wall is still pretty bare. So I said yes! I chose one of Meredith’s newborn pictures, a closeup of her face in black and white (taken by my good pal Cio). I was going for a more abstract look. The one I got is 8×10, and here’s how it…

Review: Just In Case You Ever Wonder by Max Lucado

December 10, 2011

I’m trying to build Meredith’s book collection because I want her to love reading as much as I do. So I was really happy when I saw that BookSneeze had a children’s book up for review, especially one by Max Lucado. I’m a fan of his other children’s books but this one was new. The book is told by the point of view of a parent who is telling their child the story of how God made her special and chose just the right home for her. Then it looks back on the child as a baby, happily reminiscing and then commenting on how she’s grown. But mainly it emphasizes that the parent loves the child very, very much and…
